Prologue: Election Day Tuesday, November 4th, 1986 This special What If TL has lots of twists & turns based on something I thought of during summer vacation back in the Summer of 2019.
Now the results of the down-ballot statewide offices will remain the same as they did in real life. However, the 1986 Gubernatorial election will have plenty of non-stop twist after twist......
It was Tuesday, November 4th, 1986. Election Day as 16.6 million Texans were casting their ballots in an election that would have major implications & ramifications across the Lone Star State & mainly several political experts & analysts consider the 1986 TX Gubernatorial election as a watershed moment for both the TX Democratic Party & TX Republican Party in a state that was trending more Red in recent years.

Chapter 1: The '86 Vote! 7:00 PM CST, Tuesday, November 4th, 1986 ABC 13 KTRK-TV Houston Studios Houston, TX
****************THE '86 VOTE: SPECIAL ELECTION NIGHT COVERAGE****************
Dave Ward (Ch. 13 KTRK-TV Houston Eyewitness News Anchor): "Good evening friends. I am Dave Ward and this is an Eyewitness News special coverage of "The '86 Vote".
Also helping with tonight's coverage: Shara Fryer, who's live in the Newsroom including Bob Boudreaux, Debbi Johnson, Jim Rosenfield, Melanie Lawson, Don Kobos and we've got a panel of experts who'll give their insights on the election results.
Tonight, Texans are deciding on statewide offices, congressional, legislative, countywide and other downballot races being decided by the voters tonight. But the most race folks are talking about is the hotly-contested campaign for the Texas Governor's Mansion between incumbent Democratic Governor Mark White and the Republican challenger, former Governor Bill Clements. Polls have Clements ahead throughout the entire campaign and one polling survey had Clements ahead by more than 30 percentage points at one time.
The time is now 7:16 PM, so let's take a look at the first batch of results. Now, I need to air on the side of caution.....these are the early voting results being shown. The Election Day votes will be coming out later tonight....."

Latest Developments... 8:56 PM CST, Tuesday, November 4th, 1986 ***TX GUBERNATORIAL ELECTION TOO EARLY TO CALL*** TX Governor (73% of the precincts reporting) William P. Clements, Jr., (R): 1,279,891 (52.40%) Mark W. White (D-incumbent): 1,072,573 (45.99%)Ward: "The time is 8:56 PM CST and there's no projection on the 1986 Texas Gubernatorial election because the Eyewitness News Decision Desk cannot, I once again repeat, CANNOT project a winner at this time due to the closeness of this race. As we can see here, former Governor Clements is still ahead with 73% of the precincts reporting across Texas as more votes are being tallied in all 254 counties including the state's largest counties.
I believe we've got our panelists ready with Shara Fryer in the newsroom... "

The '86 Vote Panelists.... 9:00 PM CST, Tuesday, November 4th, 1986 Ch. 13 KTRK-TV Houston Studios Houston, TX Fryer: "Welcome back to Ch. 13 Eyewitness News Tonight's special coverage of "The '86 Vote". With me here in the Eyewitness Newsroom are three panelists: University of Houston Political Science Professor Dr. Richard Murray, Dr. Marc Campos of Texas Southern University and Houston City Councilman Rodney Ellis.
I want to start with Councilman Ellis. What's causing so much interest on the Texas Gubernatorial election and why is it so close ?"
Ellis: "Good evening Shara and thank you very much for the opportunity to be here tonight. First, I believe that the mudslinging and negative TV advertising commercials including newsletters from the Clements campaign and some of their allies, have successfully done their job in damaging Governor White's standing in West Texas, parts of East Texas, the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex including exploiting several crises over the past two years for the purpose of political advantage and purposes of destroying your opponent by any means necessary.
In regards to the closeness of the Gubernatorial election and why it's so intrigued many Texans: It had gone from a campaign between two candidates in a debate of ideas, main issues concerning Texans including projecting vision for the state for the next four years.... to suddenly turning into an ugly, vicious, bitter and cutthroat campaign for the Texas Governor's Mansion considering that both Governors White and Clements engaged in similar hard-charging and full heavy contact back in 1982.
With that said, I am hopeful Governor White pulls this out once all of the votes are counted."
Fryer: "Dr. Murray, looking at the entire statewide map here in the Eyewitness Newsroom, we notice former Governor Clements is running up large margins all across West Texas, the Texas Panhandle region, sweeping the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex, by margins so overwhelming, that the White campaign chose not to even bother contesting. Instead the White campaign decided to court traditional places in the state such as the Rio Grande Valley, East Texas, Houston, San Antonio, Austin, etc.,
Question that I ask. Why is Governor White having trouble replicating the success of 1982 ?"
Murray: "The White administration didn't do themselves any favors by underestimating the anger of parents, teachers, students with the controversial 1984 "No Pass/No Play" law known as HB-72.
Governor White has been facing strong heavy headwinds during his administration. For example: the Texas economy is still in the middle of an economic recession due to Reaganomics, severe budget cuts, massive unemployment rising across the state, some cases reaching to 9%. The price of oil undergoing a downward trend, massive layoffs in the oil and gas industry angering many employees whose livelihoods depended on those jobs for their families. The Clements campaign successfully expolited these circumstances and divisions to their advantage during the campaign by questioning whether Governor White was up to the job, Clements also ran aggressive hard-hitting TV advertising commercials describing White as a typical "failed Governor" who has no business experience and no leadership..."

****************9:32 PM CST: Ward: "Welcome back to Ch. 13 Eyewitness News Tonight's special coverage of "The '86 Vote" as we're getting more counties being colored in by the Decision Desk over at the Eyewitness Newsroom, detailing the hotly-contested battle for the Texas Governor's Mansion as neither Eyewitness News nor the Associated Press both cannot project a winner because it's too close to call.
Earlier in the evening, former Governor Clements was leading by 12 percentage points due to the Early Voting numbers coming in across the state and Clements had been maintaining the lead throughout the night.....
(Getting information via earpiece) I am being told that we're getting new numbers coming in from Houston, El Paso, the Rio Grande Valley, San Antonio and Austin: all of which could be good news for Governor White's chances of winning reelection. Let's take a closer look at the results, the time is 9:32 PM."
TX Governor (76% of the precincts reporting) William P. Clements, Jr., (R): 1,592,676 (51.6%) Mark W. White, Jr., (D-incumbent): 1,576,000 (48.0%)
