President Reagan 12:43 PM EST, Sunday, August 21st, 1983 Situation Room, White House Washington, DC June 7th, 1982: US President Ronald Reagan & US First Lady Nancy Reagan meeting with Pope John Paul II. Upon learning of the assassination of former Philippine Senator & opposition leader Benigno Aquino, Jr., in Manila, President Reagan held a closed-door meeting with US Vice President George HW Bush, Secretary of State George P. Shultz, US Defense Secretary Caspar Weinberger & several others. Later in the situation room, Reagan asked Shultz if anyone inside the Philippine government were involved in the Aquino assassination including the possibility rouge elements inside the Philippine government had been involved . Shultz replied he wasn't sure considering the assassination in Manila had just happened & an investigation into what occurred would be taking place soon. He also informed the President he would be contacting his Philippine counterpart on the latest developments.
Originally, President Reagan was supposed to be doing an upcoming state visit to the Philippines later in the fall of 1983, but the Aquino assassination & the ongoing developments caused President Reagan to cancel the state visit altogether. Despite his slow distancing from the authoritarian Marcos dictatorship, Reagan was not willing to risk damaging the US-Philippine alliance including his close relationship with Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos (they met during Reagan's time as CA Governor back in the late 1960s) due to several factors: the communist threat wreaking havoc in the Pacific & other parts of the world, US military bases in the Philippines, foreign aid to the Marcos regime & Philippine government including economic investments).

Kris & Cory Sunday, August 21st, 1983 Boston, MA Just HRS after Ninoy was gunned down in Manila, Corazon & her youngest daughter, Kristina were going to have to face the media in terms of answering questions about Ninoy's legacy, his role in the fight for democracy, etc.,
For Cory, she was pretty much the de-facto leader of the opposition following getting notification of her husband's assassination. It was only a matter of time before she would be called upon to lead the opposition against the Marcos dictatorship in the next few years; she showed strong resolve, calm demeanor & doing quite well during an ABC News interview from Sam Donaldson of ABC News, who was subbing-in for Ted Koppel.
However, for Kris, the youngest of the five Aquino children: she was just 12 years old when her father was assassinated. She had to do some real growing up now & things were going to be very different for her as well. Her life that she knew in the short time of being with her parent was shattered when Ninoy was gunned down back in Manila. Showing strong resolve & not even showing fear or grief in public, Kris was going to have to come to terms with also participating in protests against the Marcos dictatorship.

The Aftermath.... 10:00 AM PHST, Monday, August 22nd, 1983 Manila, Philippines Many Filipinos woke up on early Monday morning to find out the shocking news of former Philippine Senator Benigno Aquino, Jr., was assassinated on that fateful Sunday afternoon on the tarmac of the Manila International Airport in Manila. This was going to have major ramifications for the Philippines in the coming years.
With the single shot, the Philippines had been altered by assassination. The assassination of one of the arch-rivals of authoritarian Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos, many had plenty of questions that needed to be answered: "Was the Philippine government involved in the assassination of Senator Aquino?", "What are the political implications of the assassination effecting Philippine-American relations?" These questions were going to continue to multiply non-stop & the Marcos government needed to find something quick & fast to deflect attention from increasing on him, his wife Imelda & senior members of his administration.
"He knew the risks he was running," Amelia Leiss, the associate director of the MIT International studies program, said yesterday. "He thought they were worth taking. He felt he could be a rallying point for the democratic forces in the country. He was a deeply patriotic man."
Dr. Benjamin Brown, retired director of the Harvard Center for International Studies, said Aquino had studied "peaceful transition from dictatorship to democracy" there. Aquino didn't do no major writing at Harvard University, Brown said, because "He was preoccupied with what was happening in his country...He stayed in touch with everybody......He met and talked with everybody who could conceivably help him understand the Philippines."

Personal PoV 3:16 PM PHST, Monday, August 22nd, 1983 Somewhere in the outskirts of Ilocos Norte, Philippines "On August 21st, I was satisfied with the job being finished. Former Senator Aquino was a threat to the Republic, who needed to be stopped by any means necessary.
Once it was done, the Secret Task Force scattered into other parts of the globe and went to countries with no extradition treaties with the Philippines. I calmly went back to Ilocos Norte and got home, relaxing by taking a shower and then went to bed to sleep.......
Fast forward to today, the 22nd of August, I turned on the television and watched news reports of the incident at the Manila International Airport from yesterday. Little did I realize that our mission was bound to have huge implications as well as ramifications for our country going forward....."
